Nelson Mandela fought a fight for civil rights in South Africa on the streets and behind the prison walls. Even after 27 years behind those walls Mandela maintained his dignity and rose to be the first Black President of South Africa. Nelson Mandelas Autobiography Long Walk to Freedom was written up to the point Mandela won the first free election in South Africa in 1994. Before reading the summary that follows the†¦show more content†¦While going to trial one day Nelson met Winie Manzela and on their first date in 1958 he decided to marry her because she was a modern woman, independent, strong, in short Nelsons equal. In Sharkville a protest broke out and 59 Africans were killed, a state of emergency was declared and the cease of the ANC. Mandela continued to lead the ANC underground and led an armed wing nicknamed the spear of the nation. He became a military strategist, even escaping the country to campaign for the cause of ending apartheid. He traveled thought the continent and even went to London, and received military training. After his return to South Africa he was convicted for leaving the country and received a five year sentence. While he was serving his sentence the ANC was raided. Seventeen in high command and Mandela were charged with treason and conspiracy to overthrow the government. Everyone involved could be sent to death and Mandela prepared them to make the ultimate sacrifice, even if they were convicted he told the others they wouldnt appeal the ruling. Mandela made no defense for what he did, only gave a four hour speech. The Supreme Court of South Africa convicted Mandela and seven others to life in prison on Robinson Island. Mandela was 45 years old. Robinson Island is like Alcatraz in the United States. A prison island, no clocks, no newspapers, and one visit a year.
